{Fabulous} Insights From A J.Crew Employee :)

Posted on 21:10 by gaurav kumar
Michael, a J.Crew employee, shared with us some great insights on J.Crew (sorry for the long post, but I think it is worth it!):

1) Nothing is set in stone. It actually says this in our training manual. We have the power to waive almost anything and everything. It doesn't mean that it will happen, but it does mean that you do not have to immediately "ask for a supervisor" to get something done; chances are they will tell you the same as what we have told you.

2) Please don't be a bad consumer. J.Crew is a 1.3 billion dollar company, so they are going to be able to figure out if you have asked us to combine multiple discounts multiple times, or are generally scamming us. We have a dedicated group who's only job is to research customers, and classify them as VIPs, Frauds, Exceptional Negative, etc. We can usually tell if you are selling things on eBay; it's a pretty predicable pattern. It is pretty uncommon for someone to legitimately needs the same pair of clearance shoes in 5 different sizes and 2 different colors when they are on sale. We also notate every customers account thoroughly; if you have called in the past and combined multiple coupons, etc, and were told that it was a one-time courtesy, it will be notated on your account in big letters, and you will not be able to pull the stunt again. Also, don't go "rep hopping" if you don't get what you want. We may be a big company, but we are a pretty close-knit bunch inside the call center, and we do chat amongst ourselves and can usually pinpoint a customer that is calling in multiple times a night trying to get a freebie. Lastly, please don't say "I'm a great customer." If you are a great customer, we will know. You will get flagged as a VIP, and we will bend over backwards for you. A single thousand dollar order does not make a great customer. You need to hit close to five figures before you become a VIP at J.Crew.

3) The above being said; if we genuinely screw up, we will do whatever we can to fix it. We have had items hand-delivered to customers houses, sent an associate to meet a customer at the airport, and routinely send out gift cards to people that we have wronged. We even refund orders and allow the customer to simply keep the merchandise if the situation warrants.

4) If you are buying a full-price item that is not carried in stores (or your size/color preference is sold out), buy the item from physically inside a store. Let me explain: we have what is called a "red phone" inside every singe retail store. If you pick up that phone, it is a direct line to an associate in our call center. If you are ordering a full-price item from a retail store, we will waive shipping automatically. Also, if you live near a J.Crew store, just return your items to the store, and save yourself the shipping.

5) You should genuinely consider opening a J.Crew card. Complementary alterations, a discount on your first order, as well as genuinely exclusive promotions. In addition, if you are placing an order of more that $500 (a good third of my orders are above this amount), you are an idiot if you don't open the card. For every $500 you spend, you get a $25 "rewards card." Legally, we can't call it a gift card, but it is essentially the same thing.

6) J.Crew clothes are of very high quality. Our cashmere sweaters, for example, are from the Loro Piana mill. If this doesn't mean anything to you, look it up on Wikipedia. The colors are exclusive to us, but contractually, we are not allowed to advertise this fact. J.Crew actually is Loro Piana's second biggest customer; the first is the Neiman Marcus department stores. We also have a "mock store" in our call center; if you have a question about an item, just ask and we can go physically grab the item and bring it back to our desk and examine it for you. Our leather shoes and bags are from the same sources and factories as Gucci and Prada, and our costume jewelry is made by some of the same designers as the big names. J.Crew isn't the Steve & Barry's of upscale clothing...you get the same quality for a much lower price.

7) Don't be afraid to pick our brains. We are put through a style "boot-camp" of sorts; if you have a question about whether something looks good, just ask. We also have access to all kinds of detailed measurements, including things as ridiculous as the circumference of buttons and the width of zipper pulls.

8) The website sucks if you are not computer literate. Just pick up the phone and call us; there is nothing on the website that we can't order for you. Regarding the big thing with the computer upgrade and all the glitches; it is pretty much all worked out. If something happens, we will take care of you. You honestly don't have to raise hell to get good customer service with us.

In closing, I want you to know that I am not one of those people that hate their jobs and are ranting about it. I love J.Crew, I genuinely think that the clothing is amazing, and I hope that they continue to do well. I really enjoy talking to all different people who call in, and I always have a friendly chuckle with the people in Texas who are buying goose-lined coats and cashmere sweaters before they visit friends up North next week because they think that 50 degrees is going to be insanely cold. (I am from Minnesota originally).

PS: Coupon code "JUSTASK" will always get you free shipping. And of course, if you call us and use a .edu email address, you will get a 15% discount. Otherwise, show your student ID at the retail store.

"Thanks!" again to Michael for sharing with us the inner workings of J.Crew. I value his input and appreciate his willingness to share with us. (I also learned a lot from his comments too!) :)

Michael also let us know that the code JUSTASK doesn't expire. (Which equals "awesome" in my book). ;)

Lastly, I have disabled the comments. The direction of the comments towards the end ceased being a discussion. Please stop the negativity and let's try to get back to discussing our love of J.Crew clothes. :)

Love It Or Leave It: Bow Necklace Cardigan

Posted on 21:05 by gaurav kumar
Bow-necklace cardigan
Item 10175
Regular: $110.00

When it comes to clothes, I am pretty "girly". I usually love it when the description of an item includes one or two of the following terms: ruffles, sparkles, sequins, glitter, bows, (and the like). ;)

However, this time... the bows on the Bow Necklace Cardigan are too much. From a distance, the cardigan looks okay. However, I can't say the same for the up-close image of this cardigan. I feel like someone at J.Crew got carried away applying bows on a normal cardigan. (The bows are all around the neckline- including the back-too!)

To be fair, I have not seen this cardigan in person. I also think this sweater would look adorable on a 6-year old girl. However, I just don't know if a professional woman can carry this look.

What are your thoughts on this cardigan? Do you love it or would you leave it? Do you think I am being overly critical on this cardigan? Do you own this cardigan (or have tried it on)? If so, what are your first-hand impressions (and would you recommend others to purchase it)?

Product Review: Victoria Ruffle Cami {loves it!}

Posted on 10:58 by gaurav kumar
Victoria Ruffle Cami
Item 99742
Regular: $88.00

"Bravo!" to J.Crew. B-R-A-V-O! J.Crew knew how much some of us (e.g. Me) love ruffles and took it up a notch with the Victoria (click here). So beautiful in its design and so lovely in person. I could not agree more with the following description: "sophisticated double-ruffle micro-pleated collar that makes a chic and unforgettable statement."

Luckily for us, Hawaiilei shared with us a wonderful review of this gorgeous cami:

"First of all, the silk on this top is a little bit heavier and shinier (silkier?) than the fabric used on the Elizabeth and Lydia Halters. I think it makes the top a little bit dressier.

Secondly, the top is sized in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, etc, so while others have complained that the Elizabeth and Lydia Halters ran big, I was fine purchasing a size 0. I know that another complaint with the previous halters is that they were too boxy, but I didn't really find that this was a problem.

Third, I bought the top in the fuschia color and it's a bright vibrant pink color that I think will be perfect for Fall/Winter. I wanted a pop in my wardrobe, because I've been wearing a lot of black lately.

The pleating and the ruffle collar are adorable. The collar is a little stiff right now, but I can tell it will soften over time. The SA suggested that I maybe press a book down on it, but I'll probably leave it alone.

I highly recommend this item. I purchased it at full price and don't regret it at all. I'm looking forward to the rest of the Fall collection coming into the stores as well.
"

Thanks again to Hawaiilei for her great review! To be honest, I can't wait to purchase this cami and the shirt version. I really love the "ruffle look", especially with the ruffles shining out from underneath a sweater this fall & winter.

What do you think of the Victoria Ruffle Cami (and Victoria Ruffle Shirts)? Do you like the design (e.g. the double ruffle collar)? Do you plan on purchasing this item and why? If you already own the Victoria, please let us know what you think. :)

J.Crew Mini-Blooper: Chalk-Stripe University Pant

Posted on 10:32 by gaurav kumar
Every once in awhile, J.Crew will have a minor glitch with the images used in their promotions or on the website that makes me smile. It might be the missing hand (click here), the trimming of extra pant fabric (click here), or the words Yawah superimposed (click here). (We all make mistakes, it's no big deal- but it is a bit funny!) ;)
"Thanks!" to Claudia who shared with us that J.Crew has an upside-down image of the Favorite-fit chalk-stripe university pant (Item 97014; $148.00) on their website. I thought it was pretty funny to see the model upside-down. What is even funnier is that I did not even notice this until Claudia pointed it out! :)

Did you notice that the image was upside down on the website (prior to the post)? Did you notice any of the other image bloopers (e.g. the missing hand)? :)

J.Crew and Dulken & Derrick Flower Pins

Posted on 21:05 by gaurav kumar
Brief background: Dulken and Derrick haven been making beautiful silk flowers since 1941. J.Crew used D&D for J.Crew's vintage flower pin collection throughout their October catalog. The flowers sold out online (click here) and are selling out quickly at the J.Crew Collection Store in NYC (click here). Silver_Lining mentioned (in this post) that D&D had a "J.Crew Inspired" section on their website, which was later changed to "Special Collection" (even though the URL still contains "JCrewInspired"). :)

Also, Anon at 3:37PM (in this post) shared with us the following: ''The story with the flower pins is this: D&D was going out of business. J Crew bought some of their vintage pins to use in the catalog and then sell afterward. There were only a few. Someone then decied to buy D&D soon after (either the name, business, or both.) The pins in the catalog were vintage and sold out almost immediately. These pins for sale now are new and not quite the same."
Anon at 11:25AM (in the post "Interesting Take On J.Crew's Collection Store") suggested a great topic: "Could you maybe do a post based on the D&D flowers that some have ordered to review their quality, design, color etc, and also if they come with a pin attached ready to wear ..."

The flowers in the images are beautiful! Although I have not purchased any, either through J.Crew or through D&D's website, I am curious to hear from those who did. :) Are the flowers worth the price tag? Are the flowers from J.Crew "finished" (e.g come with a pin or sash already attached)?

Were any of you Aficionadas able to purchase one (either through J.Crew or through Dulken and Derrick's website)? Please let us know what you think of the pins (in terms of quality, design, color, price, and the like). :)

Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

Posted on 21:00 by gaurav kumar
This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to take advantage of the "secret sales", the additional 20%-30% off final sale items (percentage ranges from store to store), to pick up the new catalog, or to see the new November arrivals in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

Okay One More Article On The Collection Store ;)

I just had to include one more article from the Pipeline (click here). :)

Crew Cut: J.Crew Houses Women's Collection on UES
By Max Berlinger

October 15, 2008

The masterminds over at J.Crew have opened the sister store to Tribeca's Men's Collection on the Upper East Side. The store, which features only womenswear, is the brand's attempt to provide designer looks and quality at a more affordable price, and let's be real, who couldn't benefit from that? Jenna Lyons, the Creative Director at J.Crew realizes that time has come to "attract a more educated and savvy customer."

The shop has a discreet storefront and a homey, lived-in feel with wooden herringbone patterned floors, vintage lighting fixtures from France and an entire room dedicated to accessories (including an offering of Rolex watches, vintage gold lockets and silk Obi belts from Japan). The collection pairs higher end items such as calfskin jackets, hand-painted fabric blouses, python bags and cashmere cardigans with J.Crew classics such as denim, chinos and corduroys. The store also offers special services like personal shopping, a discount for college students and delivery to your home or hotel room (if you're that lazy.)

Lyons mentioned that "because of blogs and the internet, people know what's out there; they're looking for something special." This opening is paired with the announcement that J.Crew will be opening a second Men's Collection in Soho, neighboring the highly anticipated (will you open already?!) Topshop. The collection is also available for purchase online, and from the look of it, and from the success the men's store, this high-concept no-nonsense spin-off store should be the toast of the town this winter.

First, I love the additional images of the store. It is great to see what the layout looks like with all the available merchandise too! Second, when reading the quote (the first highlighted blue line), I was unsure where she was going with it. But after reading the other quote (the second highlighted blue line), I understood what Jenna was trying to overall say. She was talking about consumers who really value luxury tailoring, materials, and the like- also understand that the cost for such items and quality can be better aligned. Third, that sign is very discreet! I am pretty sure I would walk by the store and not know it was J.Crew. ;)

What do you make of the quotes? Did I get that interpretation properly or maybe I overlooked something? Also, what do you think of the store's sign (do you like or dislike how discreet it is)?

Interesting Take On J.Crew's Collection Store

Posted on 05:59 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Lauren (check out her great site: fashionism.org) who shared with us an article from the New York Times (click here) that has an interesting take on J.Crew's new Collection Store.

J.Crew Gets Uppity
By Eric Wilson

October 16, 2008

“THE timing is very ironic, I know,” said Millard S. Drexler, known as Mickey, the chief executive of J. Crew, by way of introduction to the company’s newest store, which opened Friday on Madison Avenue at 79th Street. Mr. Drexler chose just about the worst week in financial memory to introduce a J. Crew collection priced in the stratosphere of Gucci and Prada.

The first thing you see inside the store is a jacket covered in hand-painted French sequins to look like tortoiseshell, with a price of $3,000.

Regardless of the market, J.Crew’s new designer collection — sold here and at jcrew.com — has raised eyebrows among analysts and competitors who wonder why on earth a company known for its preppy basics would put on such airs(1). Mr. Drexler said he believes in the product.
“

In all of our stores in America, I felt we weren’t highlighting the clothes and accessories in the way I thought they should be(2),” he said. “And I felt that fashion was changing. The prices of designer clothes were getting to a point that was very unfriendly to a lot of people, and the ubiquity of designer clothes was making them less special. Fashion is the opposite of ubiquity.”

J.Crew’s proposal is to introduce more special items, but in small batches and in stores that feel more like an apartment. (3) The sign on the brass door at 1035 Madison Avenue is painted in old-fashioned script and is almost unnoticeable. The clothes look more like those at Michael Kors, with featherweight cashmere scarves ($150), a gold beaded dress ($595) and a printed calf-hair jacket for $2,200; but mixed in were J. Crew staples like $85 matchstick cords.

“We don’t want our customers to feel alienated,” said Jenna Lyons Mazeau, the creative director of J.Crew. “We want them to feel comfortable in our stores.” (4)

In the first three days, the store sold three of the $3,000 jackets and a surprising number of silk flower pins priced from $50 to $200, Ms. Lyons Mazeau said, looking at the numbers as a sort of validation. (Of 200 pins ordered for the store, only a dozen or so remained on Wednesday.) “ (5)

"J.Crew is such a big company, I don’t think people understand that there is a whole group of people here who love design,” she said. “We don’t just bang it out.”
(4)

There are so many points of discussion from this great article! The following comments relate to the passages above.

(1)
I agree that the timing to open the new Collection store may not have been the best. Especially considering J.Crew's recent stock prices, coupled with Goldman analysts downgrading J.Crew to 'sell' (click here). I am curious to see how well it performs during the holidays.

(2) Whether you agree with it or not, Mickey definitely has a vision for the company (and he is moving forward with it). :)

(3) I get the "small batches" concept but then again I don't. ;) I get the concept of creating exclusive and desirable items that a few are willing to pay top dollar for. However, you also don't want to turn down 100's of disappointed customers who were unable to purchase the items. It's tough to find the right balance and I am not sure if J.Crew has found it yet with lots of their exclusive items (e.g. flower pins).

(4) Reading some of the comments in yesterday's post (click here), it is clear that some customers do feel alienated. I wonder how J.Crew will manage those concerns while offering high-end merchandise. Maybe a spin-off store (a la Madewell) is one option? Also, when Jenna said that "people" don't understand, who do you think she was referring to? (I honestly don't know.) ;)

(5) Wow! I hope J.Crew will offer more flower pins for the holidays. :)

What are your thoughts on this article? Disagree or agree with any of the points made in the article or by me?

Exciting News For J.Crew Mens!

Posted on 05:38 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to Simon and David (in this post) who shared with us the following articles with fantastic news.

Breaking: J.Crew Men's Joining Topshop on Broadway
By Leslie Price
October 15, 2008
Racked (click here)

This is some mind-blowing late-in-the-day news right here: J.Crew will be opening another men's shop (a la their Liquor Store location) in Soho. The store will take the space that currently houses Universal News at 484 Broadway, which is right next door to the giant Topshop store set to open in March. From DNR: "The size and opening date have not been determined, but it is expected to debut in early 2009." Will it beat Topshop? Probably.

Muytjens to Head Men’s Design at J.Crew
By Jean E. Palmieri
Oct. 15, 2008

DNR News (click here)

NEW YORK — J.Crew is changing its
top men’s merchant and will open its third freestanding men’s store in Soho next year.

Effective Monday, Frank Muytjens, currently senior design director within the men’s area, will be elevated to vice-president of men’s design. He will succeed Todd Snyder, senior vice-president of men’s design, who will exit the company on Nov. 14, reportedly in preparation of launching his own men’s collection for fall ’09.

Muytjens, whose background includes Polo Ralph Lauren, officially takes over the men’s design duties on Monday. He had worked with Snyder at J. Crew for the past several years.

Men’s wear has been a priority of late for the specialty store chain. In August, the company unveiled its first standalone men’s store in the site of the former Liquor Store Bar in Tribeca. The 925-square-foot jewelbox at 235 West Broadway has set a new standard with its unique merchandising techniques.

Another men’s only store is set to debut at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus, N.J. on Nov. 14.

The third store will be located next to Madewell and Topshop/Topman on Broadway. The size and opening date have not been determined, but it is expected to debut in early 2009. It will take over a site currently occupied by a newsstand.

Very exciting news indeed! I am sorry to hear Todd Snyder's exit, but I look forward to seeing Mutjens vision for the men' side of the business. I am also excited to hear that J.Crew will open another men-only clothing store in NYC. Hopefully, the economy will be in a better position by the time it opens. :)

What are your thoughts on the article? What do you think of Snyder's exit and Mutjens new position? Do you think you will visit the new men's store? :)

Product Review: Trixie Heels {gorgeous!}

Posted on 21:20 by gaurav kumar
Trixie Heels
Item 96339
Regular: $248.00

How beautiful are the Trixie heels from J.Crew? I normally don't wear heels, let alone 3 1/2" heels, but I can see myself making an exception for these! ;)

Luckily for us, two members of the blog shared with us their review of the Trixie heels. :)

Audrey (in this post) shared the following review:

"...I have the Trixie heels in "fog white dot"-- the gray one with the white dots and the pink/gray bow-- and I always get compliments on them. I felt like they fit true to size and you can even size up 1/2 if you have a wider foot, like I did-- also partly because they were the only ones left in the store. I don't usually wear high heels and the 3.5 inches is a bit hard for me for everyday wear; I'm going to end up putting in insoles because I like the extra cushioning and I feel like J.Crew shoes-- especially the flats!-- lack that support. The color is less silver than gray, but the material-- silk-- is really beautiful although it contributes to my concern about these shoes being more than "special occasion" shoes. I'm eyeing the "warm ivory" pair, maybe when they're on sale, or the Juliet midheels in either driftwood or blanched almond.

...Yes, the height and the material of this shoe aren't really encouraging of 8-5 wear. I didn't think the toebox was tight-- perhaps that's because of the 1/2 size-up?-- but there is a bit of cleavage between the big toe and the second. Since I sliced up my favorite pair of leather heels on a gravelly driveway during a wedding, I've learned to put heel tips on my shoes.
"

Roxy (in the same post) shared the following review:

"I now own the Trixie heels in warm ivory and black ... Audrey's review is well-said.

Here is my Trixie shoes mini-review: I fell in love with the warm ivory Trixie shoes as soon as I saw them in the catalog. By some stroke of luck the 5th Ave store in NYC got a whole bunch by mistake and I was able to try them on in person. I usually find that J. Crew shoes pinch my toes but the Trixie shoes do not. In fact they are pretty comfortable. If you want extra arch support I agree with Audrey's insole recommendation. I tried on both a 9 and a 9 1/2 and found they run true to size (I wear a size 9). The heel is solid and offers good support while walking.

My pair has been worn to work twice and I had no issues wearing them all day, including two 5-block walks to the subway. The bow on the warm ivory pair is closest to bright saffron while the bow on the black pair is a bronze color that I've not seen in any other pieces. The shoe material is matte and can be cleaned. The light material on the warm ivory will absorb dirt. Overall they are very nice shoes sure to draw compliments. I hope this helps. =) "

"Thanks!" to both Audrey and Roxy for sharing their great reviews with us! :)

What are your thoughts of the Trixie Heels (do you like/dislike the style, design, height)? Are you considering or already have purchased these shoes?

J.Crew Price Listing For Super 120s Pinstripe Two-Button Jacket

Posted on 21:10 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Gina who let us know that there is a price-listing glitch on the website- so as to not get our hopes up too much (which I actually did for a second!) ;)

In the J.Crew Collection Flash slide show (click here to view), there is a gorgeous suit jacket shown. When you roll over the image, the items' name (Super 120s pinstripe two-button jacket) and price ($129.99) are listed. When you click on the jacket's link, it takes you to the item page (click here) with the jacket's price listed at $240.00- which is a bit confusing (well for me anyways). ;)

J.Crew explained to Gina that this jacket was on final sale for $129.99 in the Heather Carbon at one point (and now is sold out)- which is why the $129.99 price was in the Collection Flash piece. Hopefully, J.Crew can quickly fix this minor hiccup on the website, to prevent any confusion concerning the price. :)

Incidentally, I think that suit jacket looks great with that outfit. I normally don't wear suit jackets without the matching suit pants or skirt. However, this jacket- with the sequin tank and chino- looks absolutely fabulous!!! :)

What are your thoughts on this jacket (do you like/ dislike; would you buy/ not buy)? Do you like the way the jacket is styled (in the image above) with the tank and chino? What additional ways could this jacket be worn (besides the traditional suit pants and skirt)?

J.Crew Cashmere Wash {will you get it?}

Posted on 10:34 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Lauren who shared with us some interesting news she found at the Chic Report in Fashion Week Daily (click here).

Wash ‘n Go
By Abby Gardner
October 15, 2008

Beauty Junkie recognizes that this is indeed the time of year when one must ask the question, “How ever do I wash my cashmere?” The dry cleaner is the typical route, bien sûr. But actually, ’tis better to wash those soft treasures–you just have to do it right. Enter The Laundress New York (known for their high-end, eco-friendly clothing care products) and J.Crew who have created the new J.Crew Cashmere Wash to meet your needs. It’s pH balanced with coconut-based surfactants and works for hand-washing and the machine. Plus, it includes lavender extracts which naturally repel moths for those switch-the-closet-over months. Even better? It’s only $18. Get your own at select stores, the J.Crew Collection Store at 347 Madison Avenue and 79th St., or www.jcrew.com.

I have to admit that although I am surprised to see this new product line extension from J.Crew, it does make sense. After all, one of their staple offerings is their cashmere sweaters.

P.S. The cashmere wash is not yet available online. However, J.Crew's Ulitmate Cashmere Care Kit (Item 83762, $15.00 ) is available.

What are your thoughts about the J.Crew Cashmere Wash? Do you think this is a strategic product offering? Will you purchase it? How do you care for your J.Crew cashmere now?

Article On J.Crew's Collection Store In NYC

Posted on 05:53 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" goes to j'adore couture (check out her great blog: "j'adore couture") who shared with us a fantastic article about J.Crew's Collection Store from WWD (click here).

J.Crew Opens First Collection Store
By David Moin

October 15, 2008

With an understated scripted sign on the front door, the first J. Crew Collection store stands discreetly on the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and 79th Street in Manhattan. Yet as low-key as the signage may be, the store is where J.Crew design and merchandising are at their most expressive and imaginative.

The assortment encourages mixing modern items with vintage pieces, uptown and downtown looks, and evening attire with a dose of the more casual in the same outfits. There’s an unexpected character, inside and out.

“People tell me, ‘How about putting up a bigger sign,’ but we don’t want to intrude on anyone,” said Millard “Mickey” Drexler, J.Crew’s chairman and chief executive during a tour of the store with Jenna Lyons Mazeau, the creative director. “In an Upper East Side building, I don’t think big signs are very elegant,” continued Drexler. “The last thing people want to see is their neighborhood become a strip center. It’s our way not to be out there, but to be there.”

He means with something different, and that lies in the store’s eclectic array of Crew and non-Crew products and unorthodox styling, i.e. a jacket with handpainted French sequins displayed with distressed jeans, or a brocade evening dress accessorized with a thin handmade belt and an easy cashmere scarf for a sportier twist.

Along with those items the J.Crew brand is often associated with — corduroys, T-shirts, chinos, ballet flats, jeans, cashmere and dresses — the Collection store presents some higher-end products such as calfskin jackets, priced $2,200, or patent leather jackets lined in silk twill with a Ratti print, $1,800. There are also metallic jackets and shoes in the $300 range, textured calfskin skirts priced at $495, as well as silk Japanese obi belts, Rolex watches, hand-painted Elizabeth halters, one-of-a-kind jewelry, including a vintage “mazel tov” charm bracelet, Lugano luggage, handmade silk flowers (only three per customer allowed), bleached and dyed python bags and clutches, and doublefaced cashmere jackets with pick stitching on the sleeves shown with classic J.Crew cords.

At the heart of the Collection strategy, which mirrors the approach taken by the company’s recently opened Liquor Store in TriBeCa selling men’s wear, is an effort to provide a fashion alternative, and designer looks and quality at lower-than-designer prices
. “The world has become so formulaic,” Drexler said. “You go into a designer store and all you see are the designer’s clothes. The world is full of so many beautiful things. I like to go into stores where there are surprises. We are editors in addition to designers.”

The decor of the store is different from typical J.Crew units, which tend to be essentially white backdrops enabling the products to stand out more. The Collection store, on the other hand, is filled with art, and has a residential feel. It’s broken up into a few small pockets and rooms. At the entrance, there’s a short staircase down, giving the feel of a sunken living room. Stately unlacquered brass fixtures and doors are offset by contemporary elements including bright spot lighting, parchment display tables and goatskin boxes for accessories. Some whimsy seeps in, too, with a soft blush pink dressing room with a pop of neon, the charcoal gray shoes and accessories salon housing an uncharacteristically large shoe selection for J.Crew, including flats with peep toes and feathers, and a boldly striped bathroom decorated with Hugo Guinness prints.

Although Collection products are seen in the J.Crew
catalogues and online, the buying public still isn’t as familiar with the higher-priced offering as the company would like. “People don’t know what we have,” said Lyons Mazeau. With J. Crew Collection, “We have never before been able to showcase what we do,” until the store debuted. “We plan to bring in a continuous flow of special items. It’s not about massing it out.”

Drexler declined to project a sales volume for the 3,200-square foot Collection prototype, preferring not to overstate a new concept before it’s passed the test of time. “Clearly, we are really pleased with the first three days” of business since the store opened Friday, though he noted that you can’t really judge a store’s performance by its opening act alone.

“I wouldn’t want to say the timing was the best,” Drexler acknowledged. “This is not a great economic environment, but we felt the neighborhood needed something more realistic,” compared with designer prices on Madison Avenue that Drexler said have soared so high as to be insulting.
“I think it’s all about character, honesty and integrity of product, along with good value,” he added.

Asked if he is considering additional J.Crew Collection stores, Drexler replied, “We’re not in a hurry to do anything, but not ruling anything out. We don’t feel any pressure to quickly determine where our path will take us.”

I really enjoyed the article and learned a lot about the new store. I have to say that I am looking forward to visiting the store just to look at the new layout. I am also curious as to why J.Crew restricted the number of silk flowers customers can buy. ;)

What are your thoughts on the article? Does the article make you want to visit the store more or less than before? Are you planning on visiting the Collection store (if you are in the area)?

J.Crew Final Sale Online: Extra 20% Off

Posted on 04:52 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Jackie & Lindsey B. (in the post "J.Crew November Catalog"), as well as Anonymous at 12:59 AM (in the post "What One J.Crew Item Do You Think Is An Investment", who let us know that J.Crew is offering an extra 20% off final sale items online with promo code EXTRA20. This offer expires 10/18/08.

NOTE: "Thanks!" to a J.Crew employee who shared with us that the EXTRA25 code does NOT exist. However, the EXTRA20 does work. :)

This code comes at a great time considering new arrivals are expected to be available online this week. Although, the email indicates that the 20% off is also at stores. As mentioned in an earlier post (click here), stores recently increased the additional percent off to 30%... so does that mean stores changed the additional percent off again?

Are there any items you are planning to purchase with this code? Or are you planning to wait a bit longer before purchasing any more items? :) Is your store carrying an additional 20% or 30% off final sale merchandise?

What One J.Crew Item Do You Think Is An Investment Piece?

Posted on 21:10 by gaurav kumar
JenG came up with a fabulous post topic (in the "J.Crew Stores: Take An Additional 30% Off Final Sale" post):

"What ONE JCrew item can transform and update your wardrobe?" Bang for the buck/good investment piece/style updater... What one thing can we, aficionadas, buy that says chic and modern (without breaking the bank and buying an entire new wardrobe each season)?"

This is a great question and it would be great to hear everyone's take on it. :)

What one J.Crew item would you recommend an Aficionada and Aficionado to purchase as an investment piece and/or style updater? What are some of the reasons behind that item selection? :)

J.Crew Aficionadas: What Should I Do?

Posted on 04:07 by gaurav kumar
To wake up this morning and read some of the negative comments (on both sides of the argument on materialism) still being made in the "Do You Own More Than One? ;)" post is very sad... what is even sadder is that this has been happening more and more in the posts.

This has been bothering me tremendously, so much so that I have not been posting as much myself (not only because I have been "turned off" but to also not fuel the negative off-topic conversation). I have been receiving lots of emails from members who have been "turned off" by the negativity as well, even stating that they too have been frequenting the blog less as a result.

I am not sure if another "J.Crew Aficionadas: Please Re-Read :)" post will do, since the last one seem to only temporarily work.

So I ask you all, what should happen next: Should I remove / keep the Anonymous posting feature (even though I do feel like its only punishing the majority for the tiny few who are using it to post negative comments)? I will have a poll on the side of the main page. The poll will run for one week. I hope you all take out the time to vote.
